ARCHITECTURAL STYLE
Architectural guidelines seek to capture the regional architecture with its cool external and internal spaces, large overhanging thatched roofs and wooden deck patios, ample external living space for the enjoyment of the environment and the pristine outdoors. Homes will blend with the natural surroundings where indigenous trees form the flora of the area that attracts a myriad birdlife.
The roof is the primary building component and the one that is most directly informed by the regional climate. The continuity of form and material of the roofs is paramount in the proposed architecture for the estate as a whole. Gratuitous decoration is discouraged in favour of an uncluttered architecture that is true to form and function.
The enclosure of the internal spaces is by means of light, transparent walls and the limited use of punctured solid planes. This transparent envelope is augmented by a series of shutters and screens that give depth to the elevation whilst providing the requisite shade/privacy. With a climate that is mild and comfortable throughout the year, a winter rainfall pattern and prevailing winds from the North West and South East, it is not surprising that Kwalangas climate will sway local and international tourists alike.
The diversity of site conditions dictate a variety of responses in respect of the manner in which the building should meet with the ground, ranging from a securely anchored structure to one that floats over the site, lightly touching down by means of stilted legs.
VEGETATION – FAUNA & FLORA
This region is noted for its diversity of vegetation types including large forests and over 2000 flora species including Proteas, Ericas and Orchids. The area boasts a prolific bird life with a concentration of species where 80 of the 160 regularly occurring birds can be sighted within a couple of hours of bird watching.
Wildlife in this area includes the Cape Otter, Bush Pig, Mongoose, Badger, Grysbok, Caracal, Genet, Vervet Monkey, Bushbuck and Porcupine.

ANCIENT HERITAGE
The Kouga region is a place of dreaming, a place where the ancient Khoi-Khoi (hunters and gatherers) migrated to and met to form the world’s oldest cultural group. It was here that a 2000 year old Khoisan mummy was restored and where Sarah Baartman is now laid to rest.
There is evidence in the vast dune system that the Khoi people inhabited the area over 1 700 years ago. A San skeleton found in this area dates back to 5 180 years ago.
At the Klassies River near Humansdorp, there is evidence of human habitation over 100 000 years ago.
